Multigenerational pedigree analysis of wild individually marked black sparrowhawks suggests that dark plumage coloration is a dominant autosomal trait

چکیده
The black sparrowhawk (Accipiter melanoleucus) is a color-polymorphic sub-Saharan raptor, with adults occurring in two discrete color morphs: dark and light. It has previously been suggested that plumage coloration determined by one-locus two-allele system, the light allele being dominant over allele. Here, we revisit assumption an extended dataset of 130 individuals pedigree information from 75 spanning five generations. We test observed offspring phenotypic ratio against expected under Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium find significant deviations values. Contrary to previous assumption, our data indicate fact Similarly, multigenerational pedigrees obtained are incompatible where but consistent scenario instead. However, without knowledge underlying molecular basis polymorphism, uncertainty remains, intra-morph variation suggests modifier genes or environmental factors may also be involved. Our study not only provides foundation for future research on adaptive function polymorphism species highlights need caution when drawing conclusions about mode inheritance wild animal populations absence genetic data, especially one variant numerically much rarer than other.

Dietary carotenoids predict plumage coloration in wild house finches.
Carotenoid pigments are a widespread source of ornamental coloration in vertebrates and expression of carotenoid-based colour displays has been shown to serve as an important criterion in female mate choice in birds and fishes. Unlike other integumentary pigments, carotenoids cannot be synthesized; they must be ingested. Carotenoid-based coloration is condition-dependent and has been shown to b...

IN CONTRAST to the hereditary disorders of red cells and white cells, inherited disorders of the platelets appear to be rare. Among the few reports of hereditary thrombocytopenia,1'4 some lack essential history or supporting laboratory data. Those which present more convincing evidence display a remarkable variety cf clinical features and genetic patterns. Only the so-called Aldrich syndrome7 e...

Over the next few years, the efficient use of next-generation sequencing (NGS) in human genetics research will depend heavily upon the effective mechanisms for the selective enrichment of genomic regions of interest. Recently, comprehensive exome capture arrays have become available for targeting approximately 33 Mb or approximately 180,000 coding exons across the human genome. Selective genomi...
متن کاملPlumage coloration, not length or symmetry of tail-streamers, is a sexually selected trait in North American barn swallows
Sexual adornments often vary markedly across a species’ range, which presumably is owing to differences in local environmental conditions and the associated selection pressures, such as natural versus sexual selection or the relative signaling value of different ornamental traits. However, there are only a few reported examples in which the information content of mating signals varies geographi...
متن کاملCarotenoids bolster immunity during moult in a wild songbird with sexually selected plumage coloration
Carotenoid-based colours in animals are valuable models for testing theories of sexual selection and life-history trade-offs because the pigments used in coloration are chemically tractable in the diet and in the body, where they serve multiple purposes (e.g. health enhancement, photoprotection). An important assumption underlying the hypothesized signalling value of carotenoid coloration is th...
